Journalist Sarah Efron explores strip malls and hole-in-the-wall restaurants in search of the city's best ethnic food

About Spice City Toronto

Toronto is filled with amazing ethnic hole-in-the-wall restaurants and strip mall joints serving food from all corners of the world. The aim of this blog is to discover some of the most notable places and share them with you.

When I first moved to Toronto five years ago, I was fascinated by the diversity of the people and the food here. But it wasn’t until I started Spice City Toronto I began actively seeking out ethnic restaurants outside of my downtown neighbourhood. I found a wide range of foods I had never tried before—such as Haitian goat soup and Sri Lankan banana leaf curry—and learned that many of the best restaurants are tucked away in suburban strip malls.

Unlike a food critic, I decided to only write about places I thought were truly special. I often strike up a conversation with the owners and patrons of these establishments and include their stories in my posts. My love of Toronto has grown as I’ve explored this enormous city and met great people from all over the world.

If you’ve been to a place I’ve written about, I’d love to hear your thoughts about it. Got a suggestion for an amazing restaurant? Please contact me via Twitter, Facebook, or email. I’m hoping you’ll be inspired to check out some new restaurants and sample more of the diversity this city has to offer.

Yours truly,

Sarah Efron
